Understanding the curricula

The biggest decision is which curriculum to follow. This determines not just what your child learns, but where they can easily transfer to and which universities they can access later.

How to choose

The right school depends on three things: where you came from (curriculum continuity matters), how long you're staying (if you might leave Dubai, IB offers the most portability), and your budget (fees vary enormously, and the sticker price doesn't include uniforms, transport, trips, or tech fees).

Start early. Popular schools have waitlists, especially for mid-year admissions. Begin researching and contacting schools at least 3–6 months before your move if possible. Many schools require entrance assessments, previous school reports, and immunisation records.

Check KHDA ratings. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority inspects and rates all private schools in Dubai. Ratings range from Outstanding to Weak. The inspection reports are publicly available and are genuinely useful — they highlight specific strengths and weaknesses that marketing materials obviously won't.

Visit in person. No amount of online research replaces walking through the school, talking to teachers, and seeing the facilities. Most schools offer campus tours — book them for your first week in Dubai if you haven't chosen before arriving.
